According to Google, but…

Google will not demote AI generated content, according to a recent article published in Google Search Central on Wednesday, February 8, 2023:

https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/02/google-search-and-ai-content

In it we read, Google will be rewarding content that:

demonstrates qualities of what we call E-E-A-T: expertise, experience, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness.

Focusing on the quality of the content, not on how it was produced:

Rewarding high-quality content, however it is produced

Google also acknowledges that automation has been used in the past to generate useful content, which is why Google isn’t going to ban AI generated content since:

AI can assist with and generate useful content in exciting new ways.

So where does that leave us?

Should you start pumping out content with ChatGPT to rank on Google?

The answer is No.

As we can also read:

Should I use AI to generate content?

If you see AI as an essential way to help you produce content that is helpful and original, it might be useful to consider. If you see AI as an inexpensive, easy way to game search engine rankings, then no.

Google has multiple systems in place to detect spam and ranking manipulation, Spambrain being one of them:

We have a variety of systems, including SpamBrain, that analyze patterns and signals to help us identify spam content, however it is produced.

Google is taking a middle approach, not banning AI completely and not letting it be used to manipulate search results.
